2025 Europe – Day 5 – Rotterdam

So it’s a fairly short blog today as we transition onto our river cruise. We woke up to another cloudy morning in Rotterdam, but it was a touch warmer than yesterday. We packed up all our bags and left them at reception of our hotel, while we went for the same breakfast as yesterday, although disappointingly, they didn’t have the Portuguese Tarts today.

One thing a number of people mentioned to us before we came here was to go and see one of the ‘mini-worlds’. There are a few of these around, but we chose Miniworld Rotterdam, largely because it was a short walk from our hotel. Miniworld Rotterdam is the largest indoor miniature world in the Netherlands, covering over 650m². It is a detailed miniature recreation of Rotterdam and other iconic Dutch landscapes, along with parts of Great Britain under construction. The models are built to a 1:87 scale. Every 24 minutes, day turns into night, and thousands of tiny lights illuminate the landscape.

We both felt the scenes were well put together, and we probably enjoyed it more than either of us expected too. I had lots of fun taking too many photos that I’ll probably never use. We did agree that it was definitely a worthwhile diversion and thos who like train sets and lego would love it.

We then walked back into the main shopping district to resume our quest for a lunch with some greens, with some success (see below!)… Asparagus, bok choi and broccolini! We settled on a place called Grace near the city hall and watched the world go by, while Deb ate some chicken gyoza and I had some asian roast chicken.

After lunch we went back to the hotel, collected our bags and made our way to our river-boat which will be out home for the next 14 days. Slight concerns with the piped music soundtrack of Tom Jones and the Bee Gees. We had drinks in the lounge and gathered for our safety briefing, prior to heading for dinner. We had met up with a couple from Melbourne and had a fun time with lots of great conversation and a bit of friendly banter, thus alleviating some of my earlier concerns. The meal was good, a duck entree, a chicken main (with vegetables!) and and apple pie for dessert.

Until tomorrow!
