2024 Sri Lanka – Day 19 – Maldives

So a short blog again today. The weather was a bit mixed, with rain storms blowing through in the morning and another in the afternoon. There were plenty of sunny breaks in between.

We started with a buffet breakfast, which is really the only option for breakfast here. The buffet does feature a wide variety of foods from standard western breakfast items like porridge and omelettes, to curries and rice for the asian crowd. You get some nice views from the breakfast space.

After breakfast we walked to the Dive Centre to see if we could do some snorkelling while we are here. We found that access to snorkelling gear is included in the room cost. As we left the dive centre we saw some dark clouds in the distance, but a morning storm blew in very quickly. We ran off the jetty, but unfortunately were soaked through within minutes.

We returned to the villa and decided there would be little harm in getting into the balcony pool. It was a little cool so we climbed down the ladder into the warm Indian Ocean. The water was clear and there is nice sand underfoot. There’s space under the balcony where we were able to escape the rain and enjoy the warm ocean.

For lunch today, we visited the Japanese-themed restaurant and we both had a Sashimi and Sushi platter, followed up with a yuzu dessert. This restaurant is almost on the beach so the views are great as well as the food.

We relaxed for most of the afternoon as more rain came in. We’d booked a day spa visit for massages, which were a pretty good way to fill out a lazy day.

Dinner tonight was back to the buffet restaurant. As many of you know I’m not the biggest fan of a buffet, however in this case, I’ve been twice and not eaten the same thing on either night. They do keep it fresh and interesting.

One thing I did notice was I think that 60% of the people staying here are likely Russians. They are not overly outgoing or communicative to each other, let alone engaging with any strangers. At risk of stereotyping, the ‘duck-face look is very popular and many just do not look up from their phones, even when eating.

Tomorrow is likely another lazy day, however one problem I’ll need to solve is that of our cancelled flight fro Colombo to Melbourne on Sunday. That is a tomorrow problem though.

Until tomorrow
