2023 Canada – Cruising (1)

I have to apologise, because a fair bit of today involves more travelling. We had an included breakfast where our coach times were assigned for our transfer to Seward, which is the cruise ship terminal that serves Anchorage. It actually isn’t very close to Anchorage, taking three hours in a bus. The drive takes a route along Cook Inlet, so named after Captain Cook, who really got around, having completed voyages all over the pacific, including Australia and New Zealand, and fathering eight children during his infrequent home visits. Cook Inlet was named by George Vancouver in 1794, six years after Cook’s death. The drive to Seward is quite scenic , featuring snow-capped mountains, inlets, rivers and lakes.

Once at Seward, we went through some fairly painless boarding procedures and we were on the the ship that will be our home for the next 7 days or so. The ship itself is amazing, with opulence at very turn.

We walked around the ship chatting to people we’d met either at the hotel or on the way. Once on board we went to the coffee shop on Level 5 for coffee and snacks. We also noticed some of the local residents while we were waiting to push off.

Unfortunately, the weather has turned bad here and 55 knot winds are expected so we won’t be going to Hubbard Glacier. This is disappointing, but one cannot control the weather, so tomorrow is likely just a day at sea. There will be plenty of good eating to be done. Tonight we had dinner at Compass Rose which is not one of the ‘flash’ restaurants on board, but was amazing all the same. I had Lobster Bisque and the Scallops in Lemon Creme sauce while Deb had a Crab and Avocado starter and Lobster Tail in Herb Butter main. We both had a Kahlua Souffle with caramel sauce for dessert.

Tomorrow is likely to be another day at sea… but until then…

Until Tomorrow
