Holidaying at Home – Day 5

Since I’ve been blogging about holidays, there is one thing that always happens and that is the days that things just don’t quite work out. Today was that day, but more on that later. We started the day with a cooked breakfast. The owners of the property supplied some bacon and farm raised eggs (from their farm next door. We checked out and went back to the Mundubbera Bakery to get a decent coffee and a second breakfast, that I probably didn’t need.

We are now heading back towards home, so drove down the highway to Gayndah. It’s a nice drive through hills and varied landscapes. We stopped a the McConnell Lookout just outside Gayndah to take in the view. I had been up there with my sister a few years ago. It is high and provide great views of the area which is known mainly for its oranges. It is also quite a historical town with some beautiful old buildings.

We started making out way towards Bundaberg and had thought that a drone photo over the Coalstoun Lakes craters would be cool. We followed the google directions, but only found ourselves in front of an unspectacular farmhouse. So we gave up that idea and kept driving. We stopped for lunch in Childers, which is another historical town with lots of old buildings, mainly pubs.

After a feed, we drove into Bundaberg and then onto. Bargara Beach where we are staying tonight. On our way, we thought we’d drop into the Mon Repos Turtle Centre. This area is one of the favoured nesting spots for Loggerhead Turtles. Of course, second fail of the day … It only opens in the morning. So it was straight to the apartment.

We settled into our accommodation which is very nice and fresh and took a walk along the beachfront. It’s been 25 years since I last came to Bargara and it is a far different place now, with lots of apartments. The foreshore parks have been done up nicely.

We’d had a recommendation for dinner – The Water Street Kitchen. We dropped in to the Hummock lookout on the way back into town and as the only hill in the area it offers nice views.

This was probably the best meal I’d had in a long time. The food was excellent, the service was good and the ambience was great as well.

Until tomorrow!
