Holidaying at Home – Day 4

So part of writing a blog means that sometimes my facts aren’t always correct, maybe even alternative facts?. My friend Maxim pointed out to me that the Boab trees I talked about yesterday are in fact Queensland Bottle Trees… similar, but the foliage is different. On top of that, I realised that I have misspelt Mundubbera … it has 2 Bs and 1 R.

Anyway, with my confession out the way we embarked on our day. It seems in a lot of these small towns the best place for coffee is the bakery. So armed with coffee we headed to Eidsvold as our first stop. They have built an exhibition centre to commemorate the life of RM Williams. He has an interesting story to tell… he was so much more than a boot maker, having been involved in gold mining and owning many cattle properties. He was accepted into the aboriginal communities and ran a number of cattle stations with an environmental focus.

As I mentioned earlier in the blog, our intention was to to go to Victoria and view the painted silos. Monto was our next destination and it seems there is a painted silo on the way into town. There are lots of other art installations in Monto… some are below.

We had a steak sandwich at the local pub prior to heading to Cania Gorge. We stopped along the way and noted there was a walk to a lookout. This promised a lot, but delivered little. We walked the 1.2 kilometres up hill to the lookout to discover you couldn’t actually see much from it. I guess the walk back was all downhill! Much more fulfilling was the drive down the road to the Cania Dam.

As we drove out the gorge area I stopped for a few more photos with the drone, just to capture some more of the stunning landscape. Cania Dam was completed in 1982 and is currently 45% full. We do seem to be discovering lots of dams. It is stocked with fish and hosts a fishing competition in November each year.

We drove back to the farm stay at Mundubbera and arrived just in time for some more sunset photos… and a photo of the cottage we are staying in. It has been really comfortable and great value for money… if ever you have a reason to be in Mundubbera.

We head back out to the coast tomorrow… so stay tuned.
