Poking Around San Jose

We used the last day of the holiday to check out San Jose, the capital of Costs Rica. The city itself doesn’t have a whole lot of really old buildings because the city was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1910. There are still some cathedrals and the theatre that have merit. We started in Parque de Central and walked along the central pedestrian mall that goes for about 14 blocks of largely shoe shops, perfume shops and all the american fast food brands.

We had lunch at an Argentine themed restaurant, which mad a good steak, followed by the obligatory caramel flan. From there we went to the Costa Rica National Museum which was very well set out and we felt by the end of it that we had a much better understanding of Costa Rican history from the Columbian indigenous times through to the present.

After the museum, we had an ‘Urban Adventures’ tour of San Jose at night. We did retrace some of our steps, prior to going to a chocolate tasting and then a dinner at one of San Jose’s finest restaurants called Silvestre. There were 10 people on the tour, mainly Mexicans and 2 Americans who were great company. The meal was amazing, probably the best one we’d had in Costa Rica.

In closing, San Jose is not a spectacular city, but good food is available if you know where to look and there are some interesting monuments around the city that all have stories to tell.

With just the wrap up to go….. here was my last photo of Costa Rica.
