Finally, holidays have rolled around again. With a busy football season for me and a successful art exhibition behind both of us, we are off to Cuba and Costa Rica, with a few days in Mexico to break the two touring parts of the trip.
We’ll be starting the main part of the trip in Havana, but it takes quite a bit of travelling to get there. We were able to get our flights upgraded from Premium Economy to Business which meant we’ve arrived feeling quite refreshed in comparison with the normal economy seats. We were both able to have a lie down in the night and grab a few ZZZs… and a few wines.

Additionally, I was able to watch a few movies that I’d been meaning to see under my belt. I enjoyed ‘Rocketman’ and ‘Yesterday’ both of which had musical themes. I like the way that they told the Elton John story as a musical and I always enjoy a Richard Curtis script. Some of you know about my need to watch ‘Love Actually’ at Christmas time. After a snooze I watched ‘Apollo 11’ which was interesting and did make me think about how in today’s world whether something a bold as that could actually be achieved with the focus on risk management and budgets.
We arrived into Los Angeles at 6 AM on Saturday, after leaving at 10:30 on Saturday … mind blowing eh? I always find the experience at Los Angeles airport a bit of a trial, the customer service is always a bit terse and I often end up feeling like I’m getting yelled at all the time. I do get that there are large volumes of people they have to get through, but I am sure I could help them with some improved workflow.
Our flight to Mexico City boarded on-time and we were lucky enough to have the bulkhead seats which allow a bit of extra legroom (I am winning so far!). Unfortunately the passenger next to Debbie had few personal space skills and dug her in the ribs as he tried to manoeuvre his iPad, so he could watch ‘The Lion King’. A little bit of subtle elbow placement seemed to sort the issue out, and three hours later we we landing in Mexico City. The airport was full of much friendlier people, but it was a very long walk from the gate. The bonus there being that my step count for Saturday is amazing considering all the sitting in aeroplanes. You can do a lot of steps a 40 hour day!
We are staying in the Marriott hotel at the airport prior to flying to Havana tomorrow, so dinner was a local theme with Mexican beer and Tacos on the menu. We did also notice a lot of people hanging around in racing gear (Ferrari, Renault etc) and worked out that the Mexico City Grand Prix is on tomorrow. In hindsight, that makes me happy that we booked this so far in advance!
Having not had a lot of sleep over the longest Saturday … I’ll leave it there for today.
Until tomorrow!
