Day 10 – Food & wine in Kumeu

Again a good sleep was has had and got up and going by 9 or so. We’d organised to pick up Deb’s friends; daughters for breakfast. We went to a cafe in Greylynn, one of the newly popular suburbs in Auckland. Greylynn  is one of those suburbs that was once unpopular (not so long ago), due to the large polynesian population, but has now become much sought after.

One of the girls lives in Melbourne and the other two are both about to jet off on gap-year adventures. The breakfast was amazing, but all too soon it was time to say goodbye to the girls and head on our way.

After farewelling the girls, we were chauffeured around the Kumeu district which gave us an insight into property prices in the area. It is a very scenic part of town, but there is no property under $1M. Traditionally, Kumeu is all friut growing, but the residential sprawl is taking over. We went to a great food market and bought some yummy cheeses for dinner.

Then it was off to the Matua Valley winery. Deb and her friend reminisced about fun times in the past when the ‘Hunting Lodge’ restaurant was here. Sadly those days are long gone and most of the wine products are now made in Hawkes Bay, Marlborough and Central Otago, and as such the Kumeu location will be shutdown and sold off by Easter 2016.

Next stop was the Cooper Creek winery, which offerred a lot more variety for tasting, including some older wines. It was a bit less professional than Matua Valley, but had a homely feel. So we bought some more wine and went on our way.

Then it was back to the house for a leisurely afternoon of wine, nibbles and catching up with old friends into the night.

Until tomorrow!
