Before I launch into today’s blog, I need to redress an omission from yesterday. The tallest tree in all of Southland is on the farm. Ian’s son David (who is a surveyor by trade) accurately measured the tree and it has now been officially gazetted as the tallest tree in Southland at 48.5 metres.

One last frosty morning in Alexandra greeted us this morning, so after packing all our stuff up we decided that breakfast at the Court House cafe would save us any last clean up activities. The serve a pretty good Irish Hash with eggs.

We decided to take the more scenic route back to Dunedin, which took us via Ranfurly. There is a bike trail that goes from Clyde to Middlemarch which follows the old Central Otago rail line. (I’m keen to do that in another holiday). The scenery through the Maniototo is amazing, with the snow covered mountain backdrop.

We had lunch at the iconic Ranfurly Hotel, which I have since found out has nothing to do with the Ranfurly Shield (a rugby thing… named after the Earl of Ranfurly). Anyway, here’s the pub!

From there it was a bit of a rush to get to the airport on time due to the more circuitous route, but it was a great drive nonetheless. On arrival into Brisbane it was 20 degrees at 6 PM … so goodbye snow jacket and scarf and 3 layers
So that’s it for this holiday, I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. We’ll be off again in December… so until then … Hei konā rā
