Day 14 – Gore back to Alex

After seemingly half cooking myself in the night, due to a very efficient electric blanket and some thick ‘duvets’ on the bed, we again woke up to another frosty morning. After getting up and having some breakfast, we ventured out to see where Kathi and Ian had gotten to. For them there is always work on the farm, and having had a relatively poor season and lambing about to start, today was no different. When visitors are staying they usually can find some way to help.

There I was on my way to help move various lots of sheep to new areas on food. As you may be able to see, Southland is rather muddy… and this mud gets stuck on the wool, commonly called dags. The other problem is that it is cold and even the puddles in the paddocks freeze.

So after helping spread some feed and reorganise some fences, it was clearly time for morning tea. The real reason for the gathering in Gore was for Deb’s grandmother to spend some time with her three grand-daughters … Deb and Kathi and Ian’s daughters Hilary and Victoria. That left Kathi, Ian and I with the associated children. They were no trouble, particularly with Hannah’s great skills with the little ones!

Then it was back to Alexandra for Deb and I, for our final night away and to plan our route back to Dunedin for our flight home.

Until tomorrow
