on the menu to start the dayThe plan for the customary breakfast was changed this morning. In a grave error of judgement I omitted from yesterday’s blog that we had won a meat tray in one of the club raffles – this one to support the lawn bowlers I think. So, it was sausages and scrambled eggs on the menu this morning.
Then we hit the road to Queenstown. It’s an interesting drive through the Kawarau Gorge and Gibbson Valley. We took a leisurely walk around the waterfront, discovering a few galleries and other tourist trap shops.

We had visited Queenstown in 2000 and it was largely unrecognisable, such was the scale of development. Similarly to Wanaka, I hope that someone has a town plan in mind. There are still a few quaint building in the town, like the Anglican church.

Luckily enough, we’d spent enough time walking around that we were hungry again – we haven’t done enough eating on this trip. We found a place on the waterfront – and this was the view from where I sat!

After lunch, we bought some afternoon tea goodies (just in case we got hungry again) and visited Deb’s cousin, Victoria and her two daughters. Victoria’s husband Shane had left yesterday for some more work in the US. While they now live in New Zealand after stints in the US and Abu Dhabi, a fair portion of his work life is still abroad. They live in a newish sub-division near Lake Hayes and according to NZ census data around 50% of males in the area work from home, rather than traditional work arrangements.
Late in the day, we headed back to Alex, before it got too dark and before any frost or ice settled on the roads. One thing we have noticed is that the sun doesn’t really get very high in the sky, which means that the ‘golden hour’ late in the day lasts much longer than in Brisbane.

Tomorrow we are hoping to take a scenic flight (my 50th present from the family), but need to wait until the pilot confirms in the morning… fingers crossed.
Oh! and one final note… I like Netball… always have! Good on the Aussie Diamonds for bringing home another World Cup!
Until tomorrow
