Markets, waterwheels … and afternoon drinks on the terrace

We woke up to a perfect sunrise here in Provence … so it was me once again out with the camera to try to capture in my amateurish ways. Given that I’d already posted a plain old sunrise photo … here’s one of our driveway… instead…

Following the standard croissant breakfast it was market hunting time again. Our first stop this morning was our local town of Goult. We also stopped to look in a few of the specialty shops … including one that was run by an English woman who told us how the shop used to be the local mechanics garage and they had worked hard to clean it all up and strip back the covered walls to bring is back to the traditional stone and exposed beams. It is interesting to note that the traditional businesses are making way for decorating shops as this part of France becomes a target for retirees and renovators.

From there we drove to Menerbes … no driving incidents today… I’ve almost got the hang of this wrong side of the road caper! We again wandered though the town… finally discovering that the castle we sit lit up at night from the terrace at our house was in fact in Menerbes.

Some views across the valley…

After Menerbes … it was off to L’Isle sur la Sorgue, a town which is on an island as the Sorgue River splits. Historically, the river played a large part of life in the town… there are numerous water wheels as you walk along the river… which is mainly the domain of a health population of ducks these days. The day had turned very summery … with the mercury hitting 30 degrees while we had lunch by the river.

More river views…

Following a little wander around we drove back to Goult. There is a winery just down the road from the house – Chateau La Verrerie… so we dropped in there and bought a couple of bottles of wine. The interesting thing is that buying wine from the Chateau is much cheaper than the experience of cellar door purchases in Australia… typically 5-10 Euros.

Afternoon drinks watching the light fade … feeling very relaxed!

Until tomorrow

Rob
