En Provence … premier jour

We started the day with a brilliant sunrise streaming in our windows. For those of you who know my dislike of early mornings while on holidays… have no fear … Sunrise is at 7:30 ish… a rather civilised hour… I think.

Now that we were up and about I took some photos in the early light while it lasted. It was cloudy all day so we were lucky to have the early light. The morning sun hitting the house …

We followed breakfast with a visit to our local village of Goult. It is only 1.2 kilometres away (apparently) but is up a big hill… so it’s driving distance. We needed to stock the fridge for tonight … so the first ‘order of business’ was to visit the Epicure and the Boucherie. Goult is an beautiful traditional village that we spent an hour wandering around before doing shopping. The people are friendly and accommodating.. The lady at the Boucherie talked to us at some length… I didn’t understand a word … but she kept smiling … so all is good, I say!

From there we drove to Bonnieux … an even more charming village on top of a hill. We wandered about … but have found that Monday is a day off for many in the villages … so it was cool to not have the crowds traipsing around with us. The village was every bit as interesting as other places we’ve been to… (Toledo, Bruges) but was so much more relaxing without the crowds.

After the charming nature of these two towns we then drove to Apt … which is apparently also highly regarded… As it turned out … not by me. It just seemed to have lost its village feel and had perhaps outgrown itself. We did have a great lunch, but it did have little else going for it. It was a bigger town and demanded more of my left-hand driving skills… which were ultimately found wanting as I managed to wipe out the right hand mirror of the rental car as my spatial awareness deserted me.

So back to the house it was … for a drink (to celebrate my aforementioned driving skills) … and for Deb to pull out the paint brushes.

Until tomorrow
